From: steve on 4 Mar 2010 11:13 Got me a new computer, Acer Aspire X1301 with an AMD Athlon X3 425 processor. Running 64 bit Windows 7 (which I do want to keep on the computer.) I tried to boot up my Slackware 11.0 installation disk and the computer failed to boot from the CD and defaulted back to Windows. Is this something I should have expected? Trying to boot a 64 bit computer with a 32 bit CD? From what I'm reading the new Slackware 13.0 DVD set does have a 64 bit linux. Will my computer boot from this? Are all the libraries and executables 64 bit? Does gcc generate 64 bit binaries? I've got to have my linux. Being stuck in Windows is driving me nuts. --

Trying to boot a >64 bit computer with a 32 bit CD? AFAIK that should work fine, but I'd not expect Slackware-11 to be of any use on your hardware, after all, the installer runs an old 2.4 series kernel that would be quite clueless as to how to drive your hardware. > >From what I'm reading the new Slackware 13.0 DVD set does have a 64 >bit linux. Yes, yes, yes :) Make sure you grab Slackware64-13, though 32 bit slack-13 works as well. > >I've got to have my linux. Being stuck in Windows is driving me nuts. Well yes, I use both, I'd not run windows without a slackware box between 'doze and the big, bad Internet ;) Grant.

I heard something similar from a friend who got an Acer computer. I think he put it down to the SATA interface of either the CD drive or the HD. Booting a 64bit computer from a 32bit CD is not a problem, I do it regularly. db
