Just to chip in with my two cents, I suggest you download and listen to
the FLOSS Weekly episode about ZFS (http://www.twit.tv/floss58) where
they talk about all things ZFS, including raidz and how ZFS makes use
of different types of drives to speed up things.

Ok, I looked at the ZFS entry on Wikipedia, and it says ZFS supports
2^64 filesystems per zpool, so I don't think that will be a problem
technically. Administratively it might be more of a job though.
