Was there a change in the mbox format used by Mozilla Thunderbird to
store messages when moving from 1.x to 2.x?

No. Mbox format has been unchanged for decades.

There *may* have been a change in the index files, however, I can't recall.

I think so...

I think the threaded view was based on the information in the message
header, right? Why would that 5 folders' indexes failed when all the
others worked? Puzzling....

Do you have time to see one of the 5 mbox files?

There is no sensitive stuff there, just messages about programming in
Visual Foxpro! :)
