From: Ralph on 26 Dec 2005 15:09 Hi Everyone, I'm using Q 2004 Deluxe Release 1. What I was simply trying to do is move my data from one PC to another one. Before I copied the file, I checked the attributes on the Data File on the original PC (the "old" PC). The data file is not write-protected. The data file is 10.4 megabytes So I made the copy. I burned the entire file set onto a CD ROM. I copied all 5 files in the fileset onto the CD ROM (DATA ,and data.QPH, data.QTX, data.QEL, and data.QSD). When attempting to access the data file on the new PC, I got this message, "Could not open the file". After copying the data file, I checked the attributes and found the Read Only box is checked! When I click the read-only bit, the check mark goes away. When I click on either "Apply" or "OK", another dialog box opens up which reads, "Access is Denied". I cannot remove the Read Only attribute, and I assume this is the problem with accessing my data Am I correct? If so, what should I do?

That should have read data.QDF - if it doesn't, you didn't copy the correct file. > > When attempting to access the data file on the new PC, I got this > message, > > "Could not open the file". > > After copying the data file, I checked the attributes and found the > Read Only box is checked! If so, what should I do? Did you copy the data from the CD onto the harddrive? You cannot modify attributes on the CD. Do you have Administrator authority on the PC? If not, Quicken requires Admin authority to be able to open its files.

"Did you copy the data from the CD onto the harddrive? You cannot modify attributes on the CD. " Yes, I did copy the files onto the hard drive. I did that first, but when I tried to open the data file in Quicken, I got the message, "Unable to Validate File". So I thought, I'd simply copy the data files again off my "old" PC, and then try them on my "new" PC. But, what I was doing above, was trying to access the Data off the CD ROM. I copied the files to my hard drive, then tried to open them from Quicken. And -- IT WORKED!! I am SO RELIEVED!!! <whew!>. I dont know why it did not access the file the first time. So, thanks very, very much for your help!! |
