Hold down the option key when a contact is selected. The groups that
contain that contact will highlight in yellow.

I found out by accident - hit the option key at some point and wondered
why some of the groups highlighted.

I also like to find things out so tend to fiddle for the sake of
fiddling. Hitting the option key is a common way of accessing
alternative "modes" - for example, turning the "new playlist" button in
iTunes into a "new smart playlist" button, or changing some menu items
in some apps.
