Not on my Mac (running 10.4.11). What additional information does yours
show with the option key?

Well, "need" is subjective.

It is a new feature in Leopard and later, and very useful.

Holding down the option key when clicking on the Airport menu shows
details about the currently connected network in indented grey text.

In Snow Leopard, it also shows basic information about each other
visible network as a tooltip if you point the mouse cursor at the
network in the list.
