I think, given the potential confusion that we have already seen on this
newsgroup with some of the File indexing "problems" in KDE 4.2, we
should put an entry in the FAQ something like the following:

Why is KDE/Slackware so slow?

Actually, it's not. KDE 4.2, which ships with the latest (13.0)
version of Slackware, does, however, have a severely problematic
daemon that runs by default. The Nepomuk/Strigi system is designed to
provide semantic desktop features and full file indexing in KDE.
However, the Strigi File indexer as of version 4.2 consumes massive
amounts of resources for what it does, and does so almost constantly.
This causes most hardware to bog down. If you are experiencing these
sorts of problems, such as the hard drive constantly in use, or the
CPU always active, you may try disabling Strigi by going into the
System Settings, going to the Advanced tab, and opening up the File
Indexing settings. From there, you can disable the file indexer. This
should speed things up considerably.

Comments? Improvements?

I see no such file icon.

I see only a "Desktop Search" icon, which then opens a "Desktop Search -
System Settings" window which has:

* Enable Nepomuk Semantic Desktop
* Enable Strigi Desktop File Indexer

.....check boxes for enabling/disabling this service. Unchecking both
boxes should result in a line stating "Strigi service not running" below
the "Enable Strigi..." checkbox line.

It seems to have improved performance somewhat. I don't have a
stopwatch to time editor key performance, but it does seems to be on
par or only marginally slower than using emacs/konsole in fluxbox
(FB). Still takes KDE what seems forever to boot up, at least
compared to FB. I'll hafta play around to see if the speed gains and
other advantages of FB offsets the advantages of things like
usb/media auto detection with KDE, which requires further
customization in FB.

I think there may be value in including the version numbers at least in
the short term, since with older versions that question did not occur as
commonly, and we expect that it will be cleared up in later versions.

Are you sure of Nepomuk's involvement in the poor performance? I do
agree that it seems very clear that Strigi is involved. I think your
suggestion to add this entry makes sense, but I want to be sure the text
that goes in is as correct as we can get it.

Yes, sorry, Desktop Search is the term for which I was looking.
Specifically, you only have to disable the file indexer for this
particular problem. Nepomuk Semantic Desktop is okay, from my
experience.
