Yes, major contributors include employees of: IBM Red Hat Sun Microsystems Oracle AMD/ATI NVidia Hewlett Packard Dell numerous others... Many of the "Other" employees are consultants and administrators who have contributed code, but their employers do not want to "sponsor" the contributor specifically for their contribution to avoid any primary or secondary liability, such as damages caused by a bug introduced by the contributor or the contribution. Many companies also contribute funds, equipment, and technical information. Many of these contributor companies would rather deal with the product of a hotly competitive market where the common framework only generates revenue based on actual SUPPORT of the products in question. Distributors who provide excellent support of a "Stable Version" as well as encouraging and staying current with "emerging" versions tend to be the most profitable, most notably Red Hat, Novell, and Concentric. Many companies have also found that Linux provides value to their own products, for example, Oracle, IBM, Sybase, and Sun have all developed products for Linux, often adding modules, shared libraries, and other utilities that allow customers to get better performance from Linux than from other operating systems available for that platform. Many companies, such as DLink, Link-Sys/Cisco, Nortel, and Sony have produced appliances based on embedded Linux kernel with modules and plug-ins designed to produce highly functional and inexpensive devices - many of which plug into the PC's USB, Ethernet, WiFi, and Video interfaces. It may even be safe to say that most "Windows Systems" now depend on "Linux Appliances" and Linux "enhancements". Linux has also produced a whole group of software applications that have enhanced the usability of Windows, even if not always as much as they have enhanced the usability of Linux. |
