I have another Elements question that I'm hoping someone can help me
with.

I own Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac. I also own Corel Painter X. In Corel
Painter, I can create a "Layer Mask" which allows me to hide or show
parts of an image without actually erasing it. On the layer mask, I can
use the color black to hide parts of the image and I can use the color
white to reveal parts of the image. I can save the image as a Photoshop
file and open it in Elements. In Elements, the layer mask is still there
and works just like it did in Painter. However, I can't figure out how
to _create_ a layer mask in Elements. That is, I keep having to use
Painter first. Is there a way to create the layer mask in Elements?

Thanks

I have version 6 and I just when to Elements help menu and selected
Photoshop Elements Help and typed Mask into the search field and one of
the articles that came up was "Edit the layer masks" this likely is what
you need.

Thanks. Actually, it's odd but I just found out that Elements 8 allows
for a clipping mask, not a plain layer mask. However, I found a message
on the website called Elements Village where people were discussing this
same topic. Someone create an Effects add-on to Elements that does allow
for a plain layer mask. I know it works for Elements 8, not sure about
Elements 6. But here's the discussion thread. One of the posts has a
link to download the add-on:
