Application conflict w/Windows Installer

From: mikelee101 on 11 Aug 2010 09:28 Hello All, We recently had a machine that had Windows reinstalled (XP Pro, SP3). It was done from an SP3 CD. All applications then reinstalled fine except one (Sage Timberline Office). The error said that Windows Installer was configured incorrectly. It would appear that this application is incompatible with the version of installer in SP3. I'm looking for a way to roll the version of Windows Installer back to 3.01. I don't see SP3 in the Add/Remove Programs dialogue box (Show Updates is checked). I imagine I can get it to work by doing another Windows reinstall from an SP2 CD, then install Timberline, then download SP3, but I'm hoping there's another trick. I did try unregistering msiexec and then renaming msi.dll, msihnd.dll and msiexec.exe (KB886630) followed by trying to install Windows Installer 3.01 (KB893803), but it told me that the current version was newer and that there was no reason to run this update. You never know, it might just install. I have an old Toshiba Satellite laptop that locks up solid requiring to power off by holding in the power button when attempting to install Ccleaner. But in safe mode it installs just fine. Probably some startup application that interferes with the installer, but I've never bothered to find out which one.
From: mikelee101 on 11 Aug 2010 12:11 When I started in Safe Mode and tried reinstalling Timberline, it told me that Windows Installer was not available in Safe Mode. I also tried installing the 3.01 version of Installer, but it still told me that the version I had was more current. I've also since noticed that Word won't open. It gives an error and says to insert the CD and run Repair. Upon doing this and clicking Diagnose and Repair problems with my office installation, it thinks for about a minute and a half and then I get a pop up that says "Windows Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close..." Not sure if they are related or not, but figured I'd mention it. Some softwares won't install or work without the Framework package. I was going to suggest using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, but I see it has been removed from the Microsoft Download Center because it can cause damage to Microsoft Office installations.
