CBM4WIN was working fine on my Vista RTM but then
my HD crashed. I replaced it, reloaded all my software
and now, part way through the boot sequence, the busy
light on the 1541 drive comes on and won't go off again.
Of course I can't access the drive when it's in that condition.
None of my BIOS settings have changed and I started
Vista with minimal drivers and the problem is still there.
I'm using an XM1541 cable. Does anyone have a clue
what might be wrong? What I should look for? Would
an XA1541 help?

TIA

Try opening a CMD prompt and doing a "cbmctrl reset" and see if that makes the light on the drive go off.

If you installed Vista with the xm1541 or xa1541 cable plugged in, it may have messed with the device setup for the parallel port and it may not be functioning correctly. Open Device Manager and look to see if the parallel port is there and that Vista reports that the device is functioning correctly.

Trying a reset gets me this:

\\.\opencbm0: The system cannot find the file specified.

Device Manager shows the port as being fine.

ok, run this:

instcbm remove
instcbm automatic

That will reinstall the driver. The problem is that the driver didn't get installed. You will need to do this from an administrator command window. To get that, you hit Windows-R, then in the box type CMD and then hit CTRL-SHIFT-ENTER which runs the command in administrator mode.
