Can I install a new JRE on top of an existing JRE (in the same directory) on WinXP?

Or do I have to uninstall the old JRE first?

More important: Does the new JRE installation process change the PATH and CLASSPATH environment
variables e.g. put the new PATH BEFORE all existing values?
