I believe we have spoken about your posting style before. This time, it
does not sound like you are in any sort of panic. If you do not recall the
conversation:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware/browse_frm/thread/162e851fdf6fb93d/
It is archived indefinitely. ;-)

When posting about an issue - do not assume anyone here knows anything about
your system, etc. No matter how many times you have posted in the same
forums, etc. Give some basic information and explain why you are posting in
the group you have chosen. It will help others help you if you give vital
information up front instead of hoping someone will pull what they might
need from you.

- Windows ____ _____ Edition with Service Pack _, __-bit
- Currently installed AntiVirus software (when did you last update it? when
did you last perforrm a *full* scan with it?)
- Last AntiMalware software used/currently installed (when did you last
update it? when did you last perforrm a *full* scan with it?)

In your specific case, you mention, "... this norton antivirus ..." and yet
provide no details. Norton AntiVirus is a very old product when presented
without supporting details like that. If you are trying to install a
version that is not compatible with your operating system - that could be
your problem. The older versions of Norton AntiVirus will not run on more
modern operating systems - so what version (Be very specific with the
product NAME and VERSION when presenting it) are you trying to install of
what specific Norton Product? It may be that it is not just AntiVirus given
it is a Norton product - it might be a Suite (which probably should be
removed and something else chosen - but that is a different discussion.)

What errors do you get when you attempt to perform your installation? Can
you give the exact steps you are performing? When you call/email Norton for
support with their product - what response do you get (call or email
directly about your problem? - I see no need for a forum post if you are
having trouble with a specific supported product.)

What got you to this point? Are you replacing some other AntiVirus
software? Did you uninstall that software completely first?

Windows XP IE8 SP3 32bit
4-5 mths ago last scan this morn. ( i do a twice daily scan ).
i don't have an anti malware, why, don't know where to find one.
sorry 'bout that. i was trying to say norton 360 version 4.0. i want to
replace it with the one that is currently installed in my machine ( phone co.
istalled it for free, w/ viruss' & all included. this i did not know & of
course they did not tell me anything of these infections ither ) the 1 that
is in my machine currently goes back to '99 before i owned a computer.
nothing shows up on the screen. i get no errors no nothing. just a blank
desktop. went to manual as i said, i tried it ( go to My Computer double
click, My Computer double click optical drive, in file list double click
Start.exe. and then click Install Norton 360 ). i followed these steps still

You need to uninstall the old antivirus software first, before you
could install another one.

But beforte you do any major software installation, I would suggest
you do a system baxk up first.

Is there a setup.exe ? instead of Start.exe.

As stated before, you need to uninstall your existing antivirus
software
first, before you can install another antivirus software.
But do backup first, before you give yourself a chance to screw up
your existing OS.

BTW, regarding posting question, here is a good start.
