Are you sure about that? I can imagine that the OS would see the printer
is there regardless.

Well, that's what happened with my system.

Why should the OS go broadcasting over the network for any connected
device that might be a printer and might use a non-standard protocol?

It's different for USB devices that can be detected when connected,
powered-up or when the bus is polled.

I don't specifically know about Canon, but on my HP the CUPS drivers (if
that's the same as Gutenprint drivers, whih I think it is) lacked some
functionality, and I had to reinstall drivers from Leopard to restore
full functionality. There are downsides to that, but nothing srerious.

I suggest you go over to the Apple discussion group on printing in Snow
Leopard.
