From: RG on 16 Jun 2010 10:51 If SBS2008 Premium is set up all on a single server initially and then a second server is added later, how easy is it to move SQL Server to the second server? Alternatively, if it's set up on the two servers and there's a problem with the second server...how easy is it to put SQL Server back onto the main SBS server or replace it with new hardware? Thanks RG
From: Russ SBITS.Biz [SBS-MVP] on 16 Jun 2010 14:05 RG Kind of hard to answer? I mean I can do it! But I don't know if I would call it easy or hard? I mean you are just moving stuff around and sometimes it can be frustrating. but as far as Hard/Easy IMO that depends on your skill level? I personally wouldn't call it easy or hard, just time consuming? It's not like a 2min process if that is what you are asking? Does that help? From: RG on 17 Jun 2010 05:59 Thanks for the feedback Russ. Is moving the server that SQL Server is installed on something that can be done with the help of wizards? I'm not short on IT experience...just not much with SBS and I know that the tendency of IT pros to bypass the wizards in SBS can cause problems :) Just trying to get some info for a friend who's jumping from SBS 2003 to 2008. He's planning to just do a fresh SBS setup and then migrate the data files, email etc. once SBS 2008 Premium is installed on a new server. The old server will then be wiped and used as the second server for SQL...just not sure if he can wait until the old server is wiped to install SQL Server. Like Cris said it's just moving things around no wizards If you know how to do it then you can consider it easy? IMO it's more of a time consuming thing... and making sure you can cover everything. I wouldn't recommend to a beginner however.
