I have a black MacBook that came with the grey OS X 10.5 install DVD.

My HD fried and I have replaced it. I am considering getting Snow Leopard
(http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AMHWP8).

Will this DVD install on a blank HD, or will I have to install 10.5 first?

I know with many of my Windows upgrades I just have to insert the previous
version CD as proof but don't have to actually install it first. Can I do
that with the above 10.6 version and will the grey 10.5 install CD (not
retail 10.5) work?

The $30 SL DVD will install on a blank HD. I suspect that the $10 SL DVD
won't, but you wouldn't have that one so you should be fine.

Yep, and, in fact, the box will clearly be labeled "RETAIL" not
"UPGRADE."

Yes. As J.J. stated, it will install on a bare hard drive.

I know you don't see any designation as "retail" or "upgrade" - that's
why I posted, to point out that the $29 box will be clearly labeled
"RETAIL" (and in all caps, as written).
