Some clues here :

and more generic clues here :

Be aware that beryl seems to not work with ATI video cards.
I spent hours (nights !) trying to make it work with ATI with no result.
It seems that 3D effects with ATI cards needs the use of XGL instead of
AIGLX but i did not succeed.

Good luck !

I had the same problem with both xorg 6.9 and 7.1

Which problem ?

Beryl needs xorg 7.1 with composite extension and will not work with xorg
6.9.

I don't know about compiz, i misread the O.P, I thought he was talking about
beryl which is different from compiz.

I can't remember, I restored xorg 6.9, because I had problems with path
when I compile most programs, even when I changed every X11R6 with X11R7 in
/etc files.
Also I had problems with ati driver. I have the old radeon 9250, and
couldn't install the driver using 2.6.19 or newer kernel.

Yes, but when I enabled composite in xorg.conf, then direct rendering was
disabled.

I think that beryl-manager was loaded in tray, but nothing else.
I think beryl first tries to locate nvidia drivers, after that aiglx.
