From: zpellman on 4 Jan 2010 19:41 I have two separate tables of contents in a document I am working on and would like to have the entries in each formatted differently. I understand how to modify an existing TOC style (e.g., TOC 1-9), but cannot figure out how to create a new TOC style. In fact, if I click the Reference tab and click Table of Contents>Insert Table of Contents>Modify, the "New" button there that would appear to allow me to create a new TOC style is grayed out. The only thing I was able to find online relating to my question was a discussion at Google Groups (http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.word.docmanagement/browse_thread/thread/7ed56144c3939324/eb4a3b10491e5fe1?#eb4a3b10491e5fe1), but the links provided there don't seem to answer my question, and it also seems that perhaps the question was misunderstood (to be clear, I understand well how to build a TOC based on custom styles, and that is not what I am trying to do). I've tried creating a new style based on TOC 1, for example, but even doing so did not allow me to select the new style from the Modify dialog when inserting a TOC. What am I doing wrong or where should I look next? Thanks. Zach
From: Suzanne S. Barnhill on 4 Jan 2010 21:57 Unless you are using all nine levels of TOC styles in your first TOC, just use some of the others in the second one. You can modify those styles to have any appearance you like and map the included headings to the required level in order to use those styles. For example, if your first TOC includes Headings 1-3, which by default will be represented by TOC 1, TOC 2, and TOC 3, then in your second TOC you disable outline levels, delete the numbers beside the built-in heading styles, and type the appropriate numbers (4, 5, and 6, say) beside the styles you want to include in the second TOC. -- Suzanne S.
