On my C:\ drive. I have a cryptic folder C:\"1a36c7744bd81b89e97568".
Within it, there is one folder called "update"
and then "update.log". The log contains the following:

"CSetupExtension::~CSetupExtension() : Entering
CSetupExtension::~CSetupExtension() : Leaving
"

I cannot delete this folder. Windows tells me Access is Denied.

Where did this come from?
Is it benign?

I already checked the resulting links. They each report the identica
problem, in what looks like forums. But nobody responded to their queries.

The hotfix and or service pack didn't/couldn't cleanup after itself. The
drive permissions are probably incorrect.

Maybe you will figure it out and post a solution for the next guy that has
the problem. ;-)

I have no idea what the folder is or what created it. So I honestly do not
know if you should delete it or not.

It's possible that whatever created it is still running on your machine that
might be why Access is denied.

Also reboot into Safe Mode and try to delete the folder.

Safe mode is a diagnostic startup environment that runs only a subset of the
drivers and services that are in your system memory. A lot of things do not
run in Safe Mode allowing you more opportunities to delete something that
may be in use by some process that only runs in Normal Mode.

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode will prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.
