I have received an attachment which the sender says is a word 2007 document.
It has a ".docx" extension. My word 2003 starts a File Conversion app but I
can't find a setting that makes the document readable.

What should the sender do to give me a document that is readable by Word
2003 without file conversion issues?

If you haven't already done so, you should download and install
the the free Office 2007 compatibility pack from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=941b3470-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466
..

Although you really should install the converter pack, you could ask the
sender to save the document as 'Word 97-2003 Document' which (s)he can find
in the 'Save As' menu.

google provides a free service to change all those docx and xlsx or
whatever to earlier formats. I tried it , works great, but also
downloaded
NativeWindsDocx2Rtf ver 3.8
from
http://www.nativewindsofmontana.com

it will also run on Win98 OS
