From: mail2tom on 5 Dec 2009 11:47 I know NOTHING about Vista. I'm trying to help a friend who's 1500 miles away who knows almost nothing about computers. Here's what we want to do: >His son is in Afghanistan. He wants to rip hunting movies from DVD's to a >smaller format, such as .avi, load a bunch of those .avi's on a thumb drive, >and mail it to his son. > >So far, I've had him download DVDFab (free version) and we've successfully >ripped one movie. From there, we tried to run it through Any Video >Converter, and this is where we're stuck. AVC keeps telling him there is no >audio (?) and stops cold. > >Does anyone have any suggestions, or possibly a simpler solution? I'm >really flying blind here and we're both getting frustrated. All that's saying is that his computer probably doesn't have the required AUDIO codec required by AVC to interpret the audio track. That's the problem with some freeware - they're good up to a point. If the videos are going to be played on a laptop, using say VLC (videolan.org) Good Luck, a better alternative conversion program would be Handbrake (handbrake.fr). It uses modern audio and video codecs (AAC and x264), is pretty fast in the conversion process, and ensures you have the required software installed. The DVD can be converted to either MP4 or MKV (Matroska) which can be viewed with VLC. Handbrake isn't a "one button" conversion program and requires user interaction to set it up properly, which could also be frustrating, but the program is used by a large group of people and there is plenty of information available by using Google search. Another alternative would be to pay $99.95 to buy a "one button" program like TMPGenc 4.0 XPress if your friend becomes totally frustrated with the free alternatives. Good luck. -- --------------------------------- --- -- - Posted with NewsLeecher v3.9 Final Web @ http://www.newsleecher.com/?usenet ------------------- ----- ---- -- -

All he want is the movie, period. No subtitles, menus, etc. Thanks to all who responded. I'm back to my four 12-hour days tomorrow but I'm going to try calling him tomorrow night if I'm not half dead.
