I have seen some DIY repair instructions online somewhere for the
common failure - I think the usual problem is that the graphics
processor comes unseated slightly, and sometimes reseating the
connetion and packing the area around to keep it in place solves the
problem. Googling should reveal more details.

Hmm! Okay - that's worth looking in to.

Thanks!

Rowland.

My 700MHz iBook video failed a month and a half ago, at a time when we
needed a laptop. At the Genius Bar, we were told "...$389 and eight to
eleven days to replace the logic board." Yesterday, I tried disassembly
to find the "Video Off" switch, but gave up after an hour's effort,
still not inside the machine.

Today, following this thread, I downloaded the disassembly instructions
at the ifixit site, bought a package of Scotch Mounting Squares for
$1.99 and fixed the machine in about 90 minutes. It's been running for
four hours now, without problem.

All, that and we have MacBook because SWMBO insisted she must have a
laptop for a holiday and conference on the other coast of the U.S.

Thanks to Roland for starting the thread and to Hugh for repeating the
instructions for the fix.
