From: Bob H on 3 Jul 2010 12:38 Samsung SyncMaster F2380 monitor Asus EN8400GS Win7 Pro Just recently, after I connected up a DVI lead from my graphics card to the monitor. Then after a period of not using my PC and leaving it on, but just switching off the monitor , when I come to switch it back on, the desktop is blank. No Icons and no toolbar, but I have a mouse arrow. Right clicking, gives me a context menu, but nothing works when I select an item. All I can do is hard reboot the machine so as to get everything back. This is happening more an more now, so has anyone any ideas as to what is causing it and then how to solve it. Thanks

I've seen reports of this behavior caused by 3rd party screen savers. Also, I read a post about automatic backups causing this behavior when the target of the backup is offline. Open your Event Log (use the search box under Start) and look for system errors that occur around the time the system freezes. If you find any prime candidates, use the copy button and paste them in a reply.

After searching through the Even Log around the time the system lost all the icons and toolbar revealed nothing of any significance. There are loads of information messages about the VSS failing, if that has any bearing on the problem. Just out of interest, since my initial post on this, I have disconnected the DVI cable from my monitor to see if the problem returns. Thanks
