I just turned on my laptop that has Windows Vista and SuseLinux 11.1.
The Splash screen was originally plain green, but now I comes up as a
winter scene with "linux" type penguins running around. One slides
down a shute on the right side of the screen. The menu appears tro be
fine and both Vista and Suse 11.1 appear to load fine.

However, this jsut appeared. I have not used the linux boot on this
machine for a month or more (used a dedicated 10.3 box). I have used
Vista on this laptop. The files in /boot and /boot/grub all date back
to 2008 or the 3-2009 install.

Anybody had a similar thing? Is this a possibly a virus?

Oh dear.

Did it get there?

> The menu appears tro be
> fine and both Vista and Suse 11.1 appear to load fine.

Of course they do. Why would you expect otherwise?

> However, this jsut appeared. I have not used the linux boot on this

That explains why you haven't seen it before.

> I have used
> Vista on this laptop.

You have my condolences.

> The files in /boot and /boot/grub all date back
> to 2008 or the 3-2009 install.

So everything's normal there then.

> Anybody had a similar thing?

I've heard about it. Last time I saw it was a while ago.

> Is this a possibly a virus?

No. It's a part of the graphical boot loader and appears at random.
During December, it's more likely to appear and, since this is the
first time you booted during December, this is the first chance you
got to see it.

Now, you can alter the chances that you'll see it. Info about that is
here:

http://en.opensuse.org/Animated_Penguin_GRUB_Splash_Screen

with info on how to completely customise the bootloader splash screen
here:

http://en.opensuse.org/Gfxboot

[0] And this is a FAQ. It's been asked about every December since 10.2
was released.
