From: francois on 4 Mar 2010 12:48 Hi everybody, In this page : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727013.aspx I can read this: "Unlike versions of Windows prior to Windows 2000, file and printer sharing with Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003 can operate without the use of NetBT." Yes indeed, if a disabled "NetBios over TCP" *in* *my* *network* *adaptater* (>Properties>clicking Advanced>clicking the WINS etc), I can use file sharing in a network with Windows 2000 server and XP Pro for the client stations, and with just TCP/IP + DNS. But, If I read this page : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143696(SQL.90).aspx I can read this: "This procedure disables the netbt.sys driver. The WINS tab of the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box contains a Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP option. Selecting this option only disables the NetBIOS Session Service (which listens on TCP port 139). It does not disable NetBIOS completely." Ok, so, I disabled "NetBios over TCP" as the previous link indicates (>Device Manager etc). But in this case, the file sharing doesn't work. Even if I just disabled the "TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service", the file sharing doesn't work either. According to this page, It's logical because (I quote) "This disables the SMB direct host listener on TCP/445 and UDP 445" and If I have correctly understood, SMB is an application overlay which is used for file sharing. But are SMB and NetBios the same thing? This is not clear for me. Always according to this page, (I quote) "The WINS tab of the Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box contains a Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP option. Selecting this option only disables the NetBIOS Session Service (which listens on TCP port 139). It does not disable NetBIOS completely." It's curious, because I made a test and listened the traffic of my network adaptater, and there is no broadcast of announcement ("Hello, my NetBios name is PC01!") and I feel as if this option disables rather the "NetBios Names traffic" than the "NetBIOS Session Service". The purpose of my questions is not pratical but just to understand. Well, all this is not clear for me and, according to my numerous researchs, I'm not the only one. So: 1) What is the difference between NetBios and SMB? I precise that I'm not a specialist of network overlays but is it possible to have precise explanations or links to precise explanations. 2) How does a NetBios application work (like net view \\PC01) without NBT? 3) Is it possible to use file sharing with NBT totally disabled (>Device Manager etc)? If it is, how? Sorry for my (too) long message and thanks in advance for your help. -- Franois Lafont
