Going by your initial post, the problematic system is just Vista RTM, correct ? I'd first check to see that all Service are set to their Default Startup type setting for Vista RTM - http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/Archive/servicecfg.htm I don't see a link on blackviper for a Default services setting list for Vista SP1, just RTM and SP2. Check the Vista archive if you need it or read the Change log of SP2 http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/changelog.htm Next, type qmgr.dll in the Start Search field . Right click the file that's found and click the Security tab. Does TrustedInstaller have Full control, Modify, Read&execute, Read, and Write Perms ? Does System and the User Names have Read&execute and Read Perms ? You could use bitsadmin /util to see what it says. OMG. This is the first time I tried this on my W7... <cmd_output OS="W7"> BITSAdmin is deprecated and is not guaranteed to be available in future versions of Windows. Administrative tools for the BITS service are now provided by BITS PowerShell cmdlets. </cmd_output> I wonder if the "BITS PowerShell cmdlets" includes a version and a repair tool too? <eg> HTH Robert Aldwinckle --- > > > "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > >> > In answer to the question about Kaspersky, I uninstalled it before >> > installing Microsoft Security Essentials. >> >> [Somebody asked a question about Kaspersky?] >> >> Had your Kaspersky subscription (or free trial) expired before you >> installed >> MSE? >> >> >> Lost in the registry space wrote: >> > Thanks to all the respondents, I've tried everything suggested thus >> > far. >> > BiTs was running, so was the Windows Modules Installer. >> > I tried the clean boot as well, that was something I hadn't previously >> > done. >> > I had already tried the Microsoft Fixit, but this time I tried the >> > aggressive mode, and it didn't help. >> > In answer to the question about Kaspersky, I uninstalled it before >> > installing Microsoft Security Essentials. >> > I have also tried renaming the Windows Update download folder. >> > The only thing that has given me an issue so far is the QMGR error. >> > >> > "The module "QMGR.DLL" was loaded but >> > the entry-point Dllregisterserver was not found. Does TrustedInstaller have Full control, Modify, Read&execute, Read, and Write Perms ? Does System and the User Names have Read&execute and Read Perms ?" No. Add to that it wouldn't allow me to take ownership of that file either. So, I finally called the Windows Update help line and spent a little over two hours on the phone with them. They did the remote assistance thing and replace every file we've done so far and they re-registered every .dll in windows it seems like. after two hours of this, they told me that "tier one support is going to call me tomorrow because they want to look at it" The tech copied a bunch of files from it, and said tomorrow they will probably want more. I'm starting to think I should've just blown it away and re-installed. Anyone want to look at the logs they created?
