From: Ben on 19 Jan 2010 08:36 Specs: Windows XP Home Dell Vostro 1000 Laptop Cable Modem IE 8.0 I have been unable to install any updates to MS Windows since December 10, 2009. I get the following error message Error Code: 0x80070643 - Cannot Install Updates The code description I get are as follows and I have tried the following websites to try and resolve the issue. I have also uninstalled Norton, Google Chrome, rebooted dozens of times and nothing works. I was on an onlince chat with MS and they wanted $50 to try and fix the issue. I said no but they did tell me that the error code I got basically means I would have to replace my hard drive. If anyone who has any suggestions or resolutions please let me know Here are the links, messages, etc. that I have used and received: Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB975051) A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Office 2003 that could enable arbitrary code to run when a maliciously modified file is opened. From: Ben on 19 Jan 2010 08:46 Oh yeah, a few more items I forgot to add: According to the MS Knowledge Base I am supposed to have the Windows Installer log extension on my computer. I do not It is supposed to start with msi and end with .log. I went to Start - Run and entered %temp% and went to the required folder. This information is not there. I also tried to manually start the Installer and got the following error message: C:\Windows\System32\mmcndmgr.dll/views.htm Lastly, I tried the MS Removal Tool, no luck Two last error messages that I wanted to pass along to you; they probably are nothing but you never know I do recall uninstalling a contact management program call ACT! back in December, probably around the time I started getting the error messages. Since then, each time I start MS Outlook I get the following error messages that I must click OK before Outlook actually opens. Mind you, it opens and works great except for this ritual that I need to go through each time I open it. These are the messages exactly I get them: C:\Windows\Systems32\ACT9ext.dll could not be installed or loaded. These issues may be resolved by clicking the Detect and Repair link in Outlook C:\PgmFiles\Act\Act for Windows\Redemption.dll could not be installed or loaded. These issues may be resolved by clicking the Detect and Repair link in Outlook Peace, Ben "Ben" wrote: > Specs: > > Windows XP Home > Dell Vostro 1000 Laptop > Cable Modem > IE 8.0 > > I have been unable to install any updates to MS Windows since December 10, > 2009. I doubt you would be able to find anything that way. Try using a cmd window instead. I'm not even sure that you would necessarily find it in %temp% so I would start the search from the root: cd \ dir/a/s msi*.log If that doesn't find what you're looking for you might need to do that search while a message window is still open. E.g. before clicking Ok on the message window which tells you it failed, switch to a cmd window and enter the above two commands. It will also help if you do the install manually instead of just rely on WU or AU to start it for you. Doing that would allow you to customize the diagnostics. Good luck Robert Aldwinckle --- > > I also tried to manually start the Installer and got the following error > message: > > C:\Windows\System32\mmcndmgr.dll/views.htm > > > Lastly, > > I tried the MS Removal Tool, no luck > > Two last error messages that I wanted to pass along to you; they probably > are nothing but you never know > > I do recall uninstalling a contact management program call ACT! back in > December, probably around the time I started getting the error messages. > Since then, each time I start MS Outlook I get the following error messages > that I must click OK before Outlook actually opens. I have a different set of KB articles but get the same result. KB907417 KB977840 MS Office 2003 SP3 The cleanup tool has no effect. I didn't uninstall anything, these started playing silly games about 5 days ago. At first my wife's XP Pro SP3 gave the problem and then cleaned itself up after a vbout 3 days. My w7 64 Ultimate just doesn't play ball. Attempts to install at every shutdown. Ian "MowGreen" wrote: > > I was on an onlince chat with MS and they wanted $50 to try and fix the > > issue.
