From: Bruce Hagen on 12 Aug 2006 12:05 OK. You are saying that when you logon the servers Website to check your mail and nothing is there? So a message was downloaded and just disappeared. Three things to try. If none work, I would contact your ISP. 1: Turn off any anti-spam program. 2: Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 3: Your Inbox may be damaged. Move any messages you wish to save to a local folder you create and then delete the Inbox.dbx file. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K03 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the DBX file for the folder in question {Inbox.dbx} and delete it. A new one will be created automatically when you open OE. General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. I'll be away for an hour, or so, but will check back then. -- Bruce Hagen MS MVP - Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "brett" <dbrett1(removethis)@toucansurf.com> wrote in message news:OvwFDUivGHA.4876(a)TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > From Brett. From: brett on 12 Aug 2006 12:43 To clarify, logging in using Outlook Express to check mail, I have been getting these error messages, 4 times now. The other messages download plus the Error Message as shown. If I login directly to the server, there is nothing in the in tray. Other messages download from the server OK except for these few. I have posed the question to the ISP and they suggested checking the email settings which were OK. I will persevere with your suggestions below and over a trial period see what happens. I was puzzled by the Error message code of 0x800420CD which does not show up on MS KB pages. From: Michael Santovec on 12 Aug 2006 15:48 You need to contact the mail server administrator. Something is screwed up with your account. The message -ERR Can't open the message file - it's gone! is coming from Server: 'pop3.toucansurf.com' Outlook Express is merely reporting the error. Since you aren't seeing the error via the web interface, it may be masking the error. If the mail administrator isn't helpful, it might be possible to delete the problem messages via Telnet. You can find these Telnet instructions at http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/pop3telnet.htm You could try the RETR command on message #10. If that fails, then issue the DELE command for the same message and then QUIT. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "brett" <dbrett1(removethis)@toucansurf.com> wrote in message news:OvwFDUivGHA.4876(a)TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... > From Brett. Sounds more like it. I do not find Toucan as an ISP (I have seen described as Tiscali in drag!) very helpful at this sort of thing.
