Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2

Error: "Volume Shadow Copy Service error: unexpected error
OpenService (shSCManager, "VSS", SERVICE_QUERY_STATUS). hr =
0x8007005"

Error generated while performing scheduled NTBackups by user Backup
(Bakup Operators Group) when user is not logged in.

I found a solution for this event that requires providing the Backup
Operators Group read rights to the VSS service. A pointer to doing so
using GPO was provided. However, the path shown in the fix does not
exist on my machine! The path shown was:

Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, System
Services, Volume Shadow Copy, Enabled (Automatic)

The sub-item "System Services" does not exist on my machine.

Upon reaching the "Enabled (Automatic)", the instructions said to edit
security and add the Backup Operators Group and provide read rights to
it. Then to do a gpudate /force.

Questions:

1. Why am I missing the "System Services" sub-item?
2. How can I add the sub-item so I can complete the fix?
3. Is there another way to provide VSS read rights to the Backup
Operators Group?

Thanks!

Hello System,

I assume you are using gpedit.msc(used to configure local policies) instead
of gpmc.msc(used to configure domain policies)? This path is located in the
domain not locally.

Best regards

As I think back to how I got to the editor, I probably was using the
local policy editor. The next time I'm at the client I will try the
domain editor. Thanks for that input, Meinolf.
