Is it also open in Excel? Check out your process list (control-shift-escape). Was Excel open, and maybe hidden, before you called xlswrite? You can always try to use "Unlocker" (http://download.cnet.com/Unlocker/ 3000-2248_4-10493998.html) to unlock the file or to see what other app has a lock on it. -ImageAnalyst
