From: Bob Williams on 11 Oct 2009 06:14 Do any of you routinely do selections of images with detailed outlines using the Filter > Extract Command? I am using PS 7.0 and for me, it is pretty tedious. Do you have a better, simpler and quicker way to do the selection? There used to be a PS plug-in called "Knockout". I never used it but I suspect the program is still available somewhere. Anybody use it? Is it significantly different from EXTRACT? Bob Williams
From: Kabuki on 11 Oct 2009 15:39 I never use extract In PS 4 was a selection tutorial and I learned from that do you have magnetic lasso in version 7? I use a combination of tools and also depends upon the photo background If there are large similar color background like a cyc I use Select>color range (then inverse) also the magic wand at various tolerances can be used to clean up messy areas I also like the magnetic lasso for that, as it hugs to edges as you go around many people like the pen tool (I don't) another completely different method is using channels it seems complex but if you follow along the steps it is not bad http://av.adobe.com/russellbrown/AdvancedMasking.mov (long load time-wait) "Bob Williams" <mytbobnospam(a)cox.net> wrote in message news:JdiAm.43894$bP1.42648(a)newsfe24.iad... > Do any of you routinely do selections of images with detailed outlines > using the Filter > Extract Command? > I am using PS 7.0 and for me, it is pretty tedious. > Do you have a better, simpler and quicker way to do the selection? > > There used to be a PS plug-in called "Knockout". > I never used it but I suspect the program is still available somewhere. > Anybody use it? > Is it significantly different from EXTRACT? > Bob Williams

(Which has been dropped in later versions) Also good for extractions is Quick Mask. I do use a Wacom Bamboo tablet for the close work. However, if you want KnockOut, it's now a product of Corel. KnockOut2 sells for $99. They don't seem to have a trial version. http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/us/en/Product/1152105061771#tabview=tab0 A Wacom Bamboo tablet is also $99 (or less if you catch a special offer), and money better spent (imo) than $99 for KnockOut2. -- Tony Cooper - Orlando, Florida
From: Bob Williams on 12 Oct 2009 03:12 Yes! I have the Magnetic Lasso in PS 7.0 I sometimes use it for selecting detail but selecting stuff like hair, fur, feathers, etc., drives me nuts. I've been considering a Wacom tablet but haven't taken the "plunge" yet.
