That is certainly speaking loosely (not a wise choice for a technical
newsgroup, btw... :) ).

You might look at the wikipedia article on usenet as starters.

This is _NOT_ a forum; it's a usenet newsgroup; you are...

which is TMW's front end. Any newsreader can point at any nntp server
that mirrors c.s-s.m and do the same (w/o the gui front end, of course,
w/ facilities depending on what the particular newsreader of choice
supports as for extensions beyond the simple, straight text).

That's up to TMW for their interface; usenet protocol is controlled by
the pertinent RFCs; as noted elsewhere you can look at the wikipedia
article on usenet for a primer on the subject.

That's what usenet is for and its strength. Adding unnecessary fluff
and overhead to the de minimus solution will simply retard both numbers
of experts who monitor and respond as well as increase latency w/o any
concomitant benefits of note.

The only thing I'd like to see is a splitoff of Simulink and other TMW
products from the cs-sm leaving it for Matlab alone. That would reduce
traffic and provide a concentration of expertise.

It's interesting that you say that. We tried proposing such a split a
couple of years ago (man, has it already been almost SIX YEARS?) and didn't
get a lot of feedback:

If I remember correctly, due to the low response we didn't proceed to the
Call for Votes stage.

I don't recall seeing that then; is was in 2004 while I was still
actively consulting; may well not have been monitor cs-sm at the time.

As an aside, that's the first time I looked at a link on the TMW web
newsreader; it reinforces my problem owing to dialup (owing to rural
location) that web-based viewers aren't a viable replacement in that it
took something approaching a minute for that link to load whereas I can
download the complete set of headers from the news server for all the
groups I follow (9 at the moment altho cssm is by far the most active)
in less time than that.

I notice somebody did a sample on the number of posts mentioning
Simulink and got it to be <10%; I'd have thought it somewhat higher than
that just from impressions.

There is that Simulink is tied in w/ Matlab; perhaps there's more reason
to keep together than I'm aware having never had a Simulink
installation. I routinely just ignore them if Simulink is in the header
because I don't know enough about the product to know whether there's a
"Matlab'y" answer or whether it is unique. It seems that most that I
read have something to do about the use of control/simulation blocks in
the models; that is certainly not germane to Matlab.

I don't know that it would go; just a thought that as a non-Simulink
user it would be nice to not be sidetracked. (I know, I should probably
just set a filter in the newsreader to ignore the threads and that would
solve the problem from this end... :) )
