As follow-up and close-out on this:

* Thanks for various replies.

* My MacBook is indeed a 2007, not 2009, model (and I'll be replacing
it by a current MacBook Pro model with all current software as soon as I
get a chance to do this).

* The HD verified OK with no problems using Disk Utility (and I
appreciate that this doesn't rigorously prove that it's all OK -- but
there's also no obvious HD clicking or odd sounds from it).

* I then uninstalled my recently installed purchase of Macaroni -- and
the sluggishness seems to have gone away.

I'd like to add that this should emphatically NOT be taken as a knock on
Macaroni: I had seen a lot of good reviews of Macaroni before I
purchased it; I installed it hastily and without a lot of care in
setting it up; I appreciate that my OS is two versions out of date; and
an crucial phrase in all of this is "seems to have . . . " since I can't
and don't claim to have explored this problem carefully or in any detail.
