Thank you for your prompt replies.

Saving the file with a rich text format worked okay until I tried to open it
again after saving it. Word gave me the message that the file caused a
serious error, so I deleted the rich text format version of the file.

A couple of questions result.

1 - is there any diagnostic that I can run on this one file to see if its
corrupt? I say if because when I opened the Word2007 version of it, I don't
receive the "serious error" message. When I was in the business world and
using business versions of Excel and Word, Microsoft used to place a yellow
"X" on the file document icon in the list of documents of all files, if the
file was corrupt. I don't see that notation on my home version.

2 - is there a quick way to find hyperlinks within this large file?

Note: Everytime this file is opened the disk can be heard spinning and the
icon that denotes a pen writing at the bottom of the document is constantly
writing.

Did you try Graham suggestion of selecting everything EXCEPT the final
paragraph mark (ΒΆ) in the document and copying it and pasting it into a new
document.

Or, from a new document, go to the Inset tab and click on the Object
pulldown and select the Text from File item and in the dialog that opens,
browse to and select the troublesome document.
