Yes it -NIN- does carry a.f.n, altho' typically the denizens of a.f.n
aren't necessarily helpful; but it is probably a more appropriate place
to discuss the issues than here.

Personally, I don't think free is the best way to get binaries; I
believe that you should go for 'real cheap' instead.

An example of so-called 'free' is free tera which costs a one-time
registration fee and you don't get very much and it is often poorly
admin/ed.

Insstead Buy a $2-$4 non-expiring block (such as usenet-news) if you
don't need very much. Buy a bigger non-expiring block if you do need a
lot. If you are going to get serious, also use multiple free servers
plus a non-expiring block and also a regular subscription all at the
same time.
