Hijackthis gave me some idea that the malware was related to tssd, but removing the related HKLM\..\Run entries in the registry didn't help. When I was just about to give up, I came across a page that pointed to: http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684. I downloaded the tdsskiller and scanned my PC with it, it found the malware (i8042prt.sys) and removed it without any fuss. A reboot was required to complete the task. My PC was clean again. The URL redirection has stopped and the hibernation is working again. Thanks to all others who tried to help, including BB :)
