I bought my 24" iMac last April and it has developed faint grey soft-
edged horizontal bands about two or three inches apart across the
screen. I noticed it a while ago and now it's annoying me. Any ideas
as to what might have caused this (or indeed might still be causing
it)? It was a John Lewis purchase so no problems in dealing with it,
I'm sure, but if it's something simple I'd sooner not go through the
hassle... TIA for any advice.

Mine (purchased autumn 2007) does the same. It is irritating. I think
that either they disappear, or I stop noticing them, once the display
has warmed up a bit.

I think it's the way the display is designed.

How do they (back) light them?

Mine is still an old 18" iG5, smack in the middle of the batch numbers
with the faulty capacitors. It's about four years old and I have been
expecting it to go on the fritz for much of that time, but it just keeps
on keeping on. The display is lovely, no flaws that I can see. I confess
that I do like the idea of a shiny new one, but 21" is just too big for
my desk. It'll fit, but be a bit of a squeeze. And the way I sit at the
desk, my relation to the keyboard and the screen really suits the 18"
display.

Oh well.

What is this thing about bigness anyway?

No, it's definitely a fault in the lighting circuit. In your case,
it'll probably be a capacitor out of spec that goes into spec as it
warms. If you're on 3 year Applecare, I'd recommend getting it sorted
next time you're off on holidays and won't miss it for a week.

For Andrew too, it's back to the shop for a refit.

I don't wish to sound pedantic, but isn't it 17"?
