From: Alaric Snell-Pym on 11 Feb 2006 08:50 Hello folks, I'm trying to set up this DVB card in my box. The v4l drivers seem to work right, as in lots of useful stuff appears in dmesg, and lsmod shows some useful looking modules have appeared, but when I try to run "scan": pvr(a)pvr:~$ scan -c using '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0' and '/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0' main:1882: FATAL: failed to open '/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0': 2 No such file or directory Trying to makedev them manually seems to do nothing: pvr(a)pvr:/dev$ sudo ./MAKEDEV dvb pvr(a)pvr:/dev$ ls -ld dvb ls: dvb: No such file or directory Now, this machine has hotplug and udev, so I suspect the problem is either: 1) There's a lot of kernel modules involved; perhaps they're not *all* loaded. I can't find any reference to which ones to expect for my particular card. Not having all the modules might inhibit hotplug from kicking into action. 2) There's an issue with hotplug/udev that's making it not create the files in /dev Here's the obligatory details: pvr(a)pvr:~$ uname -a Linux pvr 2.6.8-2-686 #1 Tue Aug 16 13:22:48 UTC 2005 i686 GNU/Linux pvr(a)pvr:~$ dpkg -l dvb-utils Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half- installed |/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ Name Version Description +++-==============-==============- ============================================ ii dvb-utils 1.1.0-7 Viewer programs for DVB cards pvr(a)pvr:~$ dpkg -l udev Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half- installed |/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ Name Version Description +++-======================================- ======================================- ======================================================================== ==================== ii udev 0.056-3 /dev/ management daemon pvr(a)pvr:~$ dpkg -l hotplug Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half- installed |/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ Name Version Description +++-======================================- ======================================- ======================================================================== ==================== ii hotplug 0.0.20040329-22 Linux Hotplug Scripts pvr(a)pvr:~$ cat /var/log/dmesg [...] Linux video capture interface: v1.00 cx2388x v4l2 driver version 0.0.4 loaded ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:00:0a.0[A] -> GSI 18 (level, low) -> IRQ 177 cx8800[0]: found at 0000:00:0a.0, rev: 5, irq: 177, latency: 64, mmio: 0xdc000000 cx8800[0]: Your board isn't known (yet) to the driver.
