I had the exact same problem of system noise on a laptop EXCEPT
it was with external speakers (I don't use headphones).
Turns out the problem was the SPEAKERS.
I am not sure weather you have tried different headphones or speakers
connected to the headphone jack or not but just a thought.
Best of luck getting resolved (and let us know what the problem was).
Thanks!

I haven't tried different earphones. I can't hear the sounds thru the
speakers. Another person said it was due to the lack of shielding around the
earphone assembly inside the notebook. I may follow his recommendations and
take it apart and shield the earphone assembly better and see if that works.
This seems to be a big issue with the Vostro 1500 model. I honestly dont
remember having this problem when I had vista loaded on it. I may just be
going slighty nuts.

Thanks

I hear system noise from my Dimension 5150 desktop too - not loud,
but it's there.

I have a E510. I should try to see if I can hear anything on it just out of
curiosity.
