I know nothing about the Windoze world at all - well, aside from viewing it from afar as the domain of the evil empire and staying well clear. So, erm: <http://www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htm> presents me with a choice of md5 checksums for various versions: iview427_setup.exe - b2f4f43f8fb8110c82a60e3793922912 iview427.zip - afc61deed0da83b0b84d4b4194a025f8 iview427g_setup.exe - a7f5fc23f4c798a1eef1bc1c9bae93c9 iview427g.zip - 4eeaea387d636be890faebd9bfe854f8 .... anyone know which version is the one to download? Min is out of date again - 4.10 but when I go for a Windows download I usually click on the button in the Help > About section of the installed application - the significance being it takes you to http://www.irfanview.net (note the .net) Which has never confused me the way teh .com one has done! (I doesn't seem to offer checksums. It takes you to a cnet site and the offer to download :iview427-setupexe. The interface is neither standard Windiws now=r Mac but intuitive enough. You may be asked which files you want the installer to make Irfan the default viewer - there is a long list and it will be happy enough with none ticked if you prefer not to change your setup. There is also a plug-ins file - if you are experimenting that is worth having too. Recently a client sent me an EPS file for convertion to web use - nothing on my Macs would touch it (although these are limited yet.) Nor would anything commercial on my WinXP and Vista boxes - full Adobe CS3 web suite including AI, Fireworks etc. - and an earlier suite with Freehand. I guess the client got the file from a designer using Quark or something I don't have. Anyway Irfan opened it (or the embedded TIFF) and let me save it as a Ping for Fireworks. and a JPEG. It also opens early Kodak photo CD and digital camera formats and some I have never met in the flesh. -- duncank

On the download page: MD5 checksums: iview427_setup.exe - b2f4f43f8fb8110c82a60e3793922912 iview427.zip - afc61deed0da83b0b84d4b4194a025f8 iview427g_setup.exe - a7f5fc23f4c798a1eef1bc1c9bae93c9 iview427g.zip - 4eeaea387d636be890faebd9bfe854f8 > It takes you to a cnet site and the offer to > download :iview427-setupexe. Well, I've got that now. > The interface is neither standard Windiws now=r Mac but intuitive > enough. Ah - `practically unusable', then... (that's what `intuitive enough' translates to here; I need a manual. Manuals are mostly not written these days, so I don't get to use much new software) > You may be asked which files you want the installer to make > Irfan the default viewer - there is a long list and it will be happy > enough with none ticked if you prefer not to change your setup. I rather think so - not sure what effect that sort of thing would have given that WineBottler will be involved... > There > is also a plug-ins file - if you are experimenting that is worth having > too. I don't know if experimentation is the right word. Playing, perhaps? I don't expect to be able to learn enough to experiment. > Recently a client sent me an EPS file for convertion to web use - > nothing on my Macs would touch it (although these are limited yet.) <puzzled> Ghostscript should deal with it perfectly well. > Nor > would anything commercial on my WinXP and Vista boxes - full Adobe CS3 > web suite including AI, Fireworks etc. - and an earlier suite with > Freehand. If *Adobe* software's not happy with it, one has to suspect a mangled EPS. Not really - not for what it does. I guess from your posts you have used a great deal of software over the years so won't find it difficult. > > I rather think so - not sure what effect that sort of thing would have > given that WineBottler will be involved... Can't speak for that - I must try WineBottler on something - there is some windows software I sometimes miss - especially for existing old data files. How easy is t to use and does it handle a lot of Windows stuff? I know nothig about it but will follow the link you gave. > > > Recently a client sent me an EPS file for convertion to web use - > > nothing on my Macs would touch it (although these are limited yet.) > > <puzzled> Ghostscript should deal with it perfectly well. > > > Nor > > would anything commercial on my WinXP and Vista boxes - full Adobe CS3 > > web suite including AI, Fireworks etc. - and an earlier suite with > > Freehand. > > Now that's odd. If *Adobe* software's > not happy with it, one has to suspect a mangled EPS. I agree - in fact something I tried put up a warning to that effect. It's in circumstances of last resort that I like Irfan - not familiar enough with Macs yet to know of similar solutions. That job is done now and the errant EPS gone. (My client's office guru - enthusiastic young lad with a collection of dubious software was confident he could open it and failed.) -- duncank |
