From: meyers on 3 Apr 2010 08:55 Hi, I am talking about Service-Packs (sp1,2,3) information. Quick easy way to find out what SP is active on any computer; xp,98se,vista. For the heck of it, I ran msinfo32, certainly not on the opening page. DxDiag? SysTools? MyComp, Properties, C:drive? Device Mgr? So, just wondering where a person could put this info at their fingertips, nice and easy and simply. (and of course, how many different places have this info, and how to get to them.) Thanks.

I don't know what you mean that it is not in msinfo32 and since this is an XP forum, what part of msinfo32 on XP do you think does not show the SP? Here is an example of what it should look like: OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600 OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation System Manufacturer Hewlett-Packard System Model Presario V4000 System Type X86-based PC Processor x86 Family 6 Model 13 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~1696 Mhz BIOS Version/Date Phoenix F.14, 4/27/2006 SMBIOS Version 2.31 Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32 Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1 Locale United States Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp. 080413-2111)" Time Zone Eastern Standard Time Total Physical Memory 512.00 MB Available Physical Memory 220.24 MB Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB Page File Space 1.20 GB Page File C:\pagefile.sys I think this is the best way (msinfo32, copy, paste) to get as much information as possible without asking multiple questions - what is your XP version, then what is your SP, then how much RAM do you have, then how big is your pagefile (and I'll be able to tell if you tampered with it), is it a laptop or desktop, then what is your make and model, then what is your CPU, then what is your BIOS, etc. Sometimes when information is needed the request goes something like this: "Run winver and type all the information you see back here." Well you might get some information (after you explain how to run winver in the next question cycle), but you need a lot more to understand some configurations and what you receive might be right if the person can type, but then you still have 6 other questions that you need answered, so why not come up with just one question that answers all the most likely questions at once. If you use msinfo32, copy/paste you get it all the information at once with one question instead of half a dozen and there is no possibility of a typo or leaving something out and having to ask more questions. If msinfo32 doesn't work, your system needs some other attention. The single request when you need information is: Click Start, Run and in the box enter: msinfo32 Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted information.

You can also find the SP level by looking in Control Panel> System> General tab. Shortcut to that is press and hold the Windows key, and press the Pause/Break key, then release both. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP Oct. 2002 - Sept. 2009 A+ http://dts-l.net/

By the way, there were no "Service Packs," as the term applies to the WINNT-based family of operating systems (WinNT, Win2K, WinXP, Vista), for Win98. -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555375 They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. ~Benjamin Franklin Many people would rather die than think; in fact, most do. ~Bertrand Russell The philosopher has never killed any priests, whereas the priest has killed a great many philosophers. ~ Denis Diderot

Easiest way is to right click My Computer or Computer (depending on XP or Vista/Win7) and then left click Properties. This will give the SP level, OS and more information. |
