It is considerably more difficult to add software from the CD to a partial installation than to do the full (SUNWCXall) installation. To add software to a partial installation or to repair a damaged installation, you must identify all of the software packages required to provide what you need and then install them and all their dependencies. You must then apply or reapply any patches that affect the software you have just installed.

It seems that I need to re-install my OS from the start.

If you had some good reason for doing a partial installation of Solaris you may need to identify and install ONLY the FTP package together with the necessary TCP/IP support modules. If this is your personal system and you have sufficient disk space, reinstalling Solaris probably IS the easiest way. If you are subject to corporate security policies you may be required to install what you need and ONLY what you need.

The default FTP server packages are SUNWftpr and SUNWftpu. They don't have any dependancies that I can see. If you want to reinstall your OS for practice, go for it. But it isn't necessary. In fact, I think you'll find that SUNWftpu and SUNWftpr are already there, unless you've removed them yourself. They're included in all metaclusters in Solaris 8, I believe. -- Brandon Hume - hume -> BOFH.Ca, http://WWW.BOFH.Ca/

Look at the line: # Ftp and telnet are standard Internet services. #DISABLED by install_ncftpd.pl# ftp stream tcp6 nowait root /usr/sbin/in.ftpd in.ftpd See the "#DISABLED by install_ncftpd.pl#"? Take that part out and HUP inetd. It looks like your attempt to install ncftpd did more damage than you expected. -- Brandon Hume - hume -> BOFH.Ca, http://WWW.BOFH.Ca/
