From: teabag on 8 Mar 2010 16:26 Assuming you have a desktop (tower type) PC. Buy and fit a second Hard Disk drive - ideally the same size, maybe even the same make, as your existing Hard Disk. Genie Backup Manager is a good program for backing up data. Acronis True Image is a good program for 'cloning' everything on your C drive to somewhere else. Use both for best results. If your PC is a laptop an external hard drive and Genie Backup Manager should work. I don't know (for sure) if Acronis 'cloning' will work on a laptop. There are other programs equivalent to Genie & Acronis. Backup and cloning can be done without any of these programs but the processes are more tricky. teabag "Just Trufles" <Just Trufles(a)discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:5A98B198-63FC-4D88-9AF9-46805916E31A(a)microsoft.com... > > > "Stacey" wrote: > >> I hear alot about backing up your system and what to back up. I bought a $35 external bay that any SATA drive can be plugged in to. Next I bought a 750 GB SATA hard drive. Total cost from Newegg was $125. Now download the freeware Macrium Reflect software. This is similar to Acronis True Image which is not freeware. Install this software on your computer. Firstly, use the Reflect software to create a bootable CD that you would use to boot your computer if your system crashes. Next use Reflect to create a FULL backup IMAGE (not a disk clone) of your Windows system hard drive. Create this image on the new USB hard drive. Verify it, using Reflect, to make sure it has no errors. Note: this external drive will have room for many full images, create a new one whenever you want to. Now if you ever crash Windows, or if your C: drive dies, you have a complete image of your C: drive. You can restore the image you made to a new C: drive by booting the CD you made. With that CD running you can restore your image and you are good to go again. You will not have to re-install Windows or any programs, just restore the full image. Sardine
