I know that it has digital sound output. I am not 100% sure it has digital sound input. When you plug it it, it detects the TOS link cable and enables digital stuff. When you plug in an analogue sound input device, you can then go to the system proeferences and choose the port as an input device. I'll have to try with my 2009 Macbook to see if it can take digital sound input.
