That does eliminate a lot of my concern. I didn't really have a
hard-line stance on this. It just struck me as the kind of thing you
want would to do as a last resort only.

Is there any way that libmap.conf can help here?

Sadly no. Libmap only applies to dynamic-linked binaries.
