A piece of grocery bag or two. Maybe half a mil each layer.

A good thought - it would be easier to insert (and keep flat) than
Teflon tape would be.

You might check with Professional Plastics. They seem to stock
various varieties of PFTE sheet.

I understand that their stores tend to have a "cutoffs and scrap" bin,
just as TAP Plastics does. You might be able to cadge a sufficiently
large piece of thin PFTE sheet for scrap money, rather than having to
buy a full-sized sheet.

Poly bags? We use those for when our Rottweiler let's one go during our
walks :-)

But I'll try.

I'll go through the garage bins on the weekend. Maybe I have some
leftovers from winding HV transformer prototypes.

Not the "glassine bag" type, but the type that resists tearing.
