I also had this problem, seemed SSL 1.0/2.0/3.0 where all three disabled!

(IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Security:
- Use SSL 2.0
- Use SSL 3.0
- Use TLS 1.0

Hopes this helps a lot of people... :-)

Yes, SSL is required for authentication and Messenger uses the same interface IE does.
