It has been hard finding sound work here in Pittsburgh. I turned down a
job as Board-Op for a radio show. It was long term, but 5 days a week
for 2 hours per day - 2:30-4:30PM. Even as at union scale it is nothing
I can live on, and would make it hard to do any other work. It had a
possibility of expanding to full-time in a few months, but that's too
long for my wallet to gamble on.

I interviewed for a theater job here in Pittsburgh, buy my request for
$150/day was out of their price range; I could tell by the look on their
faces. I said that my fee could range from $100-200/day - and even
though the head honcho was familiar with my work, and really wanted to
hire me ..... economics prevailed. They emailed me and said I was out of
their price range, but when their situation improved .... I would hear
from them soon.

I've been thinking about getting out of the live sound business for a
few years now, especially LOUD rock. My ears are beginning to suffer
noticeably. But it is hard to find ANY decent paying, full time
employment in Pittsburgh.

So today I took a gig doing sound for a summer residency theater in
Albany, NY at half my usual pay, but I get a free place to live. It
would start today, if I could get there today. I'll fly there on Saturday.

I'll miss my cat. And I dread paying for my chain-smoking habit in New
York state. Maybe George will Fed Ex me a few cartons from the Indian
Reservation Store near his home.

But, it is 12 weeks of a steady check. It could be worse. It's better
than what I have now.

Good luck with that Denny.

I've been in a similar boat in that I've taken a "day" job for the moment
while the band record a new CD, sort out an investor and for one of them to
sort out residency and work permits. I got my SIA licence paid for out of
it, my daily commute is 5 minutes and it is flexible enough to allow me to
carry on doing a few gigs a week. All coming to an end soon though as the
band are putting me on a wage to allow me to rehearse with them full time
ready for a toilet tour of the UK being booked at the moment. I've also had
to put together a complete touring package meaning all I need from each
venue is a couple of mains outlets and I just give them a FOH feed with all
the band on in-ears and a pair of digital desks take round with us (along
with mics/cables/stands/etc). I'll sure miss Chairman Miaow when we start
touring though and I know he'll miss me.
