The most common reasons are that the bird sees its reflection and thinks that another bird is infringing on its territory or it sees something through a window that it wants and doesn't detect the presence of the glass--a good rationale for leaving windows dirty. Incidentally, a few days ago while eating supper we heard a thump and my wife said it sounded like a bird had flown into a window. The next morning she found a dead bird on the ground beneath that window. Allen
