This seems to solve the synchronization issue. Thanks to all who
contributed.

In order to get ridden of Outlook, still another question: I have a ot of
Outlook notes archived (pst files) which I obvouisly need to keep and be
able to retrieve. Any clue there?

Launch Outlook and open all the archive files.
Then import into Thunderbird. TBird will import not only the default pst
file but also all the archive files as well.
